Some things never change:

The 1954 Convention, the first to take place (in this country) outside London, was held at the Grosvenor Hotel, Deansgate, Manchester over Whit weekend.

In the beginning was the gathering of the fans.

Here we have WALT WILLIS talking to DAVE COHEN and some characters unknown to me, whilst CHUCK HARRIS monopolises MADELEINE WILLIS, and BRIAN VARLEY counts the lolly!

Here we have MADELEINE WILLIS and CHUCK HARRIS being amused by JAMES WHITE.
In the background is BRIAN LEWIS.

TERRY JEEVES and FRANCES GLYNN

This character travelled 3,000 miles to attend the Convention.
Name?
H.P. "SANDY" SANDERSON.
Behind is part of the Con Committee: HARRY TURNER, FRANK SIMPSON, PETER HAMILTON and ETHEL LINDSAY

TED CARNELL, ??, DAVE COHEN, TED TUBB, ??
at the bar (natch)

Other people present included (from left to right)
ALF HIND, MIKE ROSENBLUM, JACK DARLINGTON, FRANCES GLYNN and FRANK SIMPSON.
JIM RATTIGAN can be seen by the curtains just behind Jack.

1954 saw the beginning of 'FEMIZINE' and all the femmefans really got together at their own stall. Here we have ETHEL LINDSAY and FRANCES GLYNN trying to palm off a copy on MARGARET FINCH and ALISTAIR PATTERSON. The young fan on the left already has his copy.

Again at the femme-fans stand we have
SHIRLEY MARRIOT ETHEL LINDSAY
FRANCES GLYNN   FRANCES EVANS

Australian femme-fan MARGARET FINCH at the TRIODE stand

Two more fans.
DAVE NEWMAN and JOY GOODWIN

PETE TAYLOR, JACK SMILLIE, BRIAN LEWIS with the deadliest weapon at the Con

GEORGE CHARTERS, JOHN BRUNNER wearing BURGESS' mask. When BURGESS took it off, women exclaimed and strong men took to drink. Not that they needed an excuse!

The Convention was archaic in so far as it had a programme, to begin with.
FRANK SIMPSON lecturing

Semi-programme-type stuff. TED TUBB as auctioneer, HARRY TURNER on the left. (Smoking? might be CHUCK HARRIS)

Part of the London Circle. RON BUCKMASTER,
SHIRLEY MARRIOT, DAVE NEWMAN,
DAPHNE BUCKMASTER and JOHN BRUNNER

More semi-programme-type stuff. This time it's FRANK SIMPSON.
ETHEL LINDSAY on the left. VINCENT CLARKE left corner.
Long-haired character in the front row is NORMAN G. WANSBOROUGH.
